Tryin' To Guess Death Battle: Lara Croft vs Nathan Drake

[NOTE: This blog was completed weeks prior to the official Death Battle episode's premiere. We're just moving it over from its original Google Docs format to this site.]

Lara Croft vs Nathan Drake.jpg

The Earth really is a vast place, isn’t it? No matter how much of it mankind puts on the map, there always seems to be something new to discover. Breathtaking landscapes, magnificent treasures, puzzling mysteries and pulse-pounding adventures… It’s all out there, waiting for those brave few willing to seek them out.

Lara Croft, gaming’s first Tomb Raider!

Nathan Drake, wise-cracking hunter of fortune!

I’m Meddadius! I take care of backstories, visual effects, and overall charm summaries! My buddy, Thomasj3-Shura, takes care of calculations and bullet points! And together, it’s our unofficial job to analyze everything anyone would possibly need to know about these two characters in order to try and predict who would win a Death Battle!

For anyone who is new to the wonderful(?!) hobby of versus debating, some of the terms used in this blog will likely be confusing to you. Luckily, there’s another blog out there with handy-dandy definitions. So, be sure to have another tab open for it. Or don’t. Be brave.

Please note: Anything marked with a * leads to author commentary / Tommy’s calcs. So please, take a look.

Lara Croft

Before we start talking about any sort of backstory, it’s important to mention that Lara’s story has been rebooted about six times. Each reboot comes with their own take on the Tomb Raider’s origins, which would make this section a fucking nightmare to go over if I talked about each one. Because no one likes fucking nightmares, we’ll just be covering the basic commonalities.

Lara Croft was born into a life of luxury, and had always been inspired to become an archaeologist due to her father. After that, things usually go pretty well for Lara in the backstory department, until she and everyone she loves steps foot onto a plane. Then, everything comes…

Crashing down*.

Lara manages to crawl away from the wreckage, only to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere, completely and totally at nature’s mercy. While most people would lose all hope in a situation like this, Lara Croft is not “most people.” Using her wits, honing her skills, and presumably eating many an endangered species, Lara manages to make it back home.

But, as it turns out, having your loved ones die in front of you and spending time all alone in the wilderness? It kinda changes a person. Lara no longer felt at peace in the society she had been raised in. For Lara, happiness was now traveling the world, discovering ancient ruins, and kicking the shit out of dinosaurs.

Yes.

Dinosaurs*.

Lara’s most prominent weapon in the reboot timeline is, without a doubt, the bow and arrow. While by itself, it doesn’t sound impressive, the sheer number and variety of arrows she can use with it make for a very dangerous weapon:
-Rope arrows
-Climbing Arrows
-Fire arrows and their upgraded variant Napalm arrows
-Poison arrows and their upgraded variant death cloud arrow
-Grenade arrows and their upgraded variant Grenade cluster arrows
-Pollen arrows- They have hallucinogenic properties
-Armor piercing arrows
-And most dangerous of all: Regular arrows.
Other pieces of equipment she’s had throughout her adventures include:
-Her prying/climbing axe
-A wire spool and axe combo to make a grapple axe
-A PDA
-Binoculares with various modes
-A grapple hook
-A combat knife….
-Bombs- Capable of raising this giant spiked thing into the air, and destroying stone structures and mechanisms.
-Assorted Crafted explosives
-Various firearms, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, etc.. The most notable one being:
-Her iconic Dual pistols

- Artifacts
(Since it’s unlikely they would all be allowed, we’ll mainly be focusing on the most important, quantifiable and likely to be considered standard enough in terms of her arsenal, or just the coolest ones.)

-Mjolnir- She has gauntlets that allow her to wield it and the hammer is described as capable of leveling mountains, her throws with it can collapse stone structures. The gloves themselves seem to enhance Lara’s strength significantly and these she actually keeps until the last time we see her in the timeline (so it might count as standard-ish equipment). Though they have very limited charge and are only recharged by contact with these nordic runes. Here she is using Mjolnir in gameplay
-Excalibur- Actually a much more ancient artifact. Mere fragments of it were shown as capable of conferring magical abilities. Can shatter stone with ease. Here she is, using it.
She loses it at the end of Legends, but gets it back at the end of Underworld.
- The dagger of Xian- it turns you into a dragon if you stab yourself with it.
-A spear-Enchanted by the gods, exclusive and standard to her guardian of light incarnation. Fairly self explanatory, returns to her after being thrown. In co-op mode, she does not receive said spear.

Skills and abilities
- Has some pretty good hearing
-Throughout the course of a game can learn languages such as ancient greek and russian just from reading bits of it
-Has many displays of quick thinking and awareness, as well as resourcefulness
-Has solved numerous puzzles in various ancient temples.
-The weave:
A one time powerup she received during her comic’s crossover with witchblade. Yes, this is real.
-Received training from Zinn the dark master, unlocking her potential
-Took gymnastics, archery and rifle club in school
-Can slow down her perception of time
-Extremely proficient climber
-Has read codices* in various tombs detailing things like:
-Archery techniques (allowing her to rapid fire 2/3 arrows in a row)
- Meditation techniques (restoring her health the first time it gets low in a given encounter)
-Awareness (Making it easier for her to spot traps)
-Mountaineering  (allowing her to climb faster)
-Medical and anatomical texts (allowing her to bandage herself faster and  see the hearts of animals)
-Greek Fire (boosting the damage of her molotovs and fire arrows)

                                                         Feats

Strength / Attack potency
- Bends a metal bar
-A single bullet from her pistols sends this guy flying or breaks apart stone
-Catches and holds up this large metal gate
-Moves around some of her house’s statues/pillars
-Her guns can halt the kinetic energy of and destroy siege weaponry projectiles capable of destroying stone (Including a silenced pistol)
-Weapons destroying chunks of stone with ease
-Pries open an old brick wall
- Her starting handguns can smash rock
-Can consistently break wood and even do this via pulling on her rope arrow
-Can pry open metal doors
-Can push large stone blocks (A feat requiring approximately 113 kilojoules per second, which is wall level). Her Legends self has a similar feat
-Her legends timeline self can do this too
-Can physically harm a guy who can (with sever injury) survive a helicopter exploding
-Breaks bullet resistant glass with a fire extinguisher
-Pulls down a pillar
-Physically contends with and kills a deathless one ( ancient soldiers granted immortality)
-Her grenade arrows can destroy barricades
-Her starting guns fire at mach 5 (that means even if we assume a very low caliber that the bullet is packing 11 kilojoules of energy (which scales to Lara’s physical strength, given she can handle the recoil) and can pierce targets of roughly small building level durability (doubles as an attack speed feat)
-Can pull stone structures through liquid with her grappling hook
-Punches someone so hard they’re sent flying through wood and into a wall
-Fights on par with Magdalena
Speed
-Dodges some arrows
-Evades bullets (the first one after it’s fired) Moving at a speed of 166m/s or mach 0.49 (calc isn’t mine, see the special thanks section)
-Keeps up with a T-rex and a velociraptor (velociraptors can reach up to 60mph in short bursts, that’s 26 m/s)
-Dodges arrow traps
-Fights Natla, who can move fast, and evades her rocket esque projectiles.
-Evades barrages of bullets easily
-Evades a speeding train somewhat
-Runs from a bear
-Her long jump is pretty good
-Dodges some spinning blades
-This henchman appears to dodge lara’s bullets after they are fired
-Can Draw her gun and shoot 3 targets before a trap is done activating
-Perceives time in slow motion, under specific circumstances in the legends timeline.
-Can steal a detonator from a soldier while everyone is looking directly at her
-Can evade a crashing plane
-Moves a bit after a bullet is fired but before it hits the wall
-Seems to move at somewhat comparable speeds to lightning
-Dodges bullets. Moving at a speed of at least 131.79 or mach 0.38
Durability/Pain tolerance
-Survives falls quite regularly, including into sharp objects after setting herself on fire
-Even in game, falls are no problem
-Survives an explosion
-And again
-And again
-And again
-She does it a lot, survive explosions that is.
-Like, a lot of explosion surviving.
-Survives everything exploding around her
-Survives her car crashing….. and exploding near her, then falling off a cliff.
-Survives 2 missiles exploding the house she’s in, said missiles packing over a fifth of a ton of TNT (small building level+)
-Gets blasted with steam
-Explodes the gas filled room next to hers without injury
-Survives her plane crashing and exploding with the energy of 284 Tons of TNT (multi city block level) and then being lost in the middle of nowhere, in the cold, with rather weather inappropriate clothing, with no supplies, the walk back to civilization taking 2 weeks
-Survives getting blasted by magic into a wall
-At the beginning of the reboot, gets impaled, pulls out the object impaling her and continues on without treating the injury properly, while climbing, hunting and fighting, only cauterising the wound much later.
-Can take hits from a giant octopus capable of breaking stone, with ease
-Gets caught in a bear trap
-Survives a helicopter crash

One of the most entertaining parts of versus debating is finding out how surprisingly powerful seemingly average characters really are. Case in point?

Lara needs to calm the hell down.

The lady Croft is an utter beast of an archaeologist, and woe befall whoever manages to piss her off. We’re talking about a woman who almost brushes aside being impaled, can walk away from an exploding plane, dodge fucking lightning, and did I mention the T-Rex thing*?

                                                 Weaknesses
-Susceptible to hallucinogenic agents, although still capable of fighting under their effects.
-Cocky to the point of not bringing climbing equipment.

Misc.
-Has a rather... prominent chest

Nathan Drake

Sir Francis Drake, world-famous explorer of the Elizabethan era, had a favorite motto: “Sic Parvis Magna,” which translates to “Thus, from small beginnings, Great Things Come.” These words certainly fit the life of a boy they inspired. That boy’s name?

… Well, you know who this segment is about, right?

As is very often the case with protagonists, Nathan Drake didn’t grow up in the nicest of circumstances. His mother, a prominent historian, committed suicide while Nate was still young, which soon landed him and his brother, Sam, into a nun-run boy’s home. Nate often got into fights, Sam was eventually kicked out due to criminal shenanigans… It really looked like their lives were heading nowhere.

That is, until the brothers managed to recover their mother’s research journals. Enclosed in the pages were decades of theories, notes, and discoveries about treasures and civilizations of old. Inspired by all of this, Nate and Sam left their former lives behind, setting out to continue their mother’s work: tracking down wonders of the world beyond man’s wildest dreams.

And then Sam died, which, y’know, kinda sucked hard for Nate.

It turned out alright, though. Nathan soldiered on with his life, and with his quick thinking, endless amounts of quips, and the help of a few friends, he managed to accomplish impossible things that Sir Francis Drake could only dream of. Discovering El Dorado, defeating a Russian warmonger hopped up on Shambalan super serum, eventually settling down with an intrepid reporter… Not too bad, Nate. Your mom would’ve been proud.

Also, Sam actually survived, so yay.
-Various shotguns, pistols, rifles, etc. Worth noting that he usually only carries one sidearm and one Gun at the same time and has no standard Arsenal at the beginning of any given mission
-He also at one point had a rather effective tranquiliser gun.
-A Machete
-A piston
-A grappling hook
-A sword (he isn’t particularly good with it)
-And the most awe inspiring tool in his arsenal, the nerf gun.

                                             Skills and abilities
-Very good climber
-Can solve numerous puzzle throughout the games and is extremely knowledgeable of  history despite being mostly self taught.
-Has shown some quick thinking
-Pretty competent at hand-to-hand brawling.
-Is almost supernaturally lucky at times.
-Could speak Latin from a young age
-Can dodge gunfire despite being blindfolded (doubles as a possible speed feat)

Mysticals multiplayer only items that need to be bought via money earned from kills/gathering treasures in a map and when used result in something*
-Shield of Asgard- 75% damage reduction and fully restores health, but reduces speed by 50% except when running. Can be modified to add the effects of:
-Downing opponents in 2 melee hits, increased duration and increased movement speed
-Indra’s eternity- Slows down enemies within aoe.
-Can be modified to increase effects and to highlight enemies in it
-Path of Indra- Teleports to allies
-or to safe location if none are available and spawn addtional fake portal
-Spirit of Djinn- Becomes invincible and speed is boosted
-Cintamani stone- Revives allies
-Staff of Ayar Manco- Sends out pulses, placing enemies in the radar
-Wrath of El Dorado- Launches specters that seek out and damage nearby enemies

Speed
-Even as a kid, was fairly agile
-Dodges a rocket
-Does it again, moving at a speed of mach 0.34
-Can do so in gameplay with ease.
-Everyone can do it at once
-Briefly outruns an armored truck
-Sam bullet times to save Nate (should scale to Nate himself), at least mach 0.3. Hurray for consistency.
-Is described as moving too fast, and difficult for a trained sniper to track
-Appears to avoid a bullet, either that, or he just tanked it without damage
-Dodges a rocket while sliding down a rope.
Durability
-As a kid, smashes through a table
-Survives large falls on numerous occasions
-Gets smashed through wood
-Survives a fall from a fairly large height
-And again, onto rocks this time
-Falls head first into a rock and into water, is knocked out but survives
-After being shot in the gut and his train crashing, he climbs his way up the train and then gets into a firefight and wins before passing out
-Smashes into a wooden structure then gets dragged into the ground while holding onto his hook tied to a speeding car
-Survives near lava
-Survives a rocket a close range (see above for how impressive that is, likely small building level durability from this), he is completely unharmed by it
-Cutter does it too with Nate also surviving it. Nate scales to Cutter somewhat.
-Tanks being near an explosion
-Gets knocked into a bathroom wall hard enough to crack it
-Can survives hits from the shambhala guardians which can toss massive rocks at him, packing over 1 megajoule of energy, which he can also survive.
-Said guardians can also break off and throw a statue’s finger hard enough to shatter it.
-Survives some exploding mummies (the only way to not get get hit by these too much is by activating zero gravity in the extras menu)
-Survives the balcony he is on getting destroyed with no visible damage
-Him and Sully survive a very big fall into water
-Survives a rocket hitting a nearby wall
-Him and Sam survive a grenade explosion
-Lands on a car hard enough to flatten it

-Golden abyss jumps*
(yes, I’m giving this it’s own section  because these are actually quite impressive)
- Very long jumps 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

In summary of all the above text?

Nathan Drake might seem like your everyday brilliant, handsome, badass treasure hunter… which… I mean… Yeah. He is.

Okay, let me rephrase: Nate might seem to be your average human at first glance, but he’s anything but. He can dodge rockets moving at a third the speed of sound, survive getting hit practically point-blank by a building-busting tank shell...

-Scared of clowns
-No immunity to hallucinogens (though he is still able to fight somewhat effectively while under their effects)
-Headstrong / not great at knowing when to call it quits
-By the time of Uncharted 4, he’s off his game to the point where Nadine (who, admittedly, is a highly trained professional) can kick his ass even while he’s being helped by Sam.

Verdicts

Meddadius

First verdict, let’s go!

Death of a character I really like, let’s noooooooo…

Like, come on. Nathan’s charming, and he has some really well-developed relationships to a well-developed cast. Think of Victor Sullivan, guys.

Okay, I’m done. Onto the fight.

The good news for Nathan Drake? The research done for this episode by both the official research team and my boy, Tommy, will likely boost Nate’s status in general versus debating. The bad news? No amount of research is gonna save him from Lara.

It’s almost like every single thing Nathan has done, Lara has done bigger and better. Nathan survived a train crash that left him stranded in the freezing cold for a few hours? Lara survived her plane exploding, which left her stranded in the freezing cold for weeks. Nathan fought yetis? Lara’s fought bigger yetis that weren’t in Scooby Doo-esque costumes… So, actual yetis. Nathan pushed blocks? Lara pushed more. That’s not even getting into things like weaponry, where Lara has held everything Nate has, and then some. The woman wielded fucking MJOLNIR! You know…

2013_09_27_20_07_43.jpg

… That Mjolnir?! I mean, it’s not the exact same one from Marvel, but you get what I mean.

You saw the summary. Literally the only thing Nate has over Lara is a longer jump. A longer. Fucking. Jump. Oh, and luck. In this show dedicated to logic, the only way Nathan Drake is winning against Lara Croft… is if he gets lucky.

Who knows? Maybe Nate will end up buried in whatever temple him and Lara will be fighting in. The famous historical treasure hunter’s remains eventually becoming a historical treasure themselves… Poetic.

Thomasj3-shura
Joker.(Persona.5).full.1837231.jpg

Okay, let’s break this down, shall we? Simply put, it ends in sexual intecour-

Wait, Nate’s a married man. Nevermind, onto his funeral.

While this doesn’t even register as a stomp by DB matchup standards, it is overwhelmingly clear cut.

Even if we ignore Lara’s 2 best feats as outliers to not give her the insurmountable might of a mid-end Comic book street leveler. She still holds a small but noticeable and meaningful advantage in all stats of the trinity. Even if we ignore Basic logi- “Powerscaling” neither of their stats are affected and Nate suffers more from this decision. Even in meaningles- Other areas, Lara holds a significant advantage, her equipment is far more destructive, varied and numerous, simply glancing at the size difference between their respective equipment sections should tell that much. And in terms of endurance, Nate’s desert and snow walks are impressive, but Lara’s 2 week long winter holiday is more than a match. Not only that, but Lara almost always holds far more formal training and is portrayed as a quick thinker in combat situations so no advantage there. Nate’s only real advantage is that he can jump greater distances and I severely doubt that’s gonna win him the fight.

That said, let’s not sell Nate short here shall we. He soundly beats the original timeline Lara, and that is no small feat. Heck, if we are talking about individual timelines, I’m sure he could give Legends timeline Lara a run for her money, assuming she doesn’t get her artifacts. The problem here is that Lara is getting feats from all her incarnations and even reboot Lara alone is more than Nate can handle.

So in blunt terms (and because I promised): Lara stomps, devastates, obliterates, atomizes, vaporizes, babyshakes, desolates, mutilates, overturns, ravages, slays, smashes, wipes out, despoils, liquidates, extirpates, pastes, dispatches, dismantles, wastes, takes apart and out, eliminates, demolishes, razes, guts, annihilates, murders, massacres, exterminates, erases, expunges, invalidates, slaughters, crushes, decimates, eradicates, pulverizes, dilapidates, hospitalizes, paralyzes, perforates, penetrates, dismantles, flattens, bulldozes, evicerates, extinguishes, trashes and wrecks Nate. (That’s 50 in total if you’re wondering)
RIP: my prefered character of these 2, at least he got some upgrades.

Hopefully the next fight will involve characters that have already been thoroughly analysed, because this was a doozy.
